This (well done) video communicates many of the reasons why I hunt. I think EVERYONE ought to go to this link and view this video… whether you hunt or not.
I worked on the Easter sermon in the morning and then enjoyed a couple hours in a ground blind this afternoon. It was a bright, sunny day. At 4:00 three toms strutted up to my decoy. One of them made the ride home with me in the truck. He had a ten-inch beard and LONG spurs.
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful Easter Sunday tomorrow. Jesus is risen!, and there is no news better than that. May you rejoice and be glad in Jesus this weekend.
Scott, Jeff, and I went to northern Nebraska this week for our annual turkey trip. (Thom couldn’t join us and RB couldn’t hunt due to a shoulder injury.) We had an awesome time together and we came home with four birds. I shot a double-bearded (see photo) tom the first night while sitting with RB and my son (first turkey hunting experience!). I shot a second tom a couple nights later, right at dark, when two toms wandered in late.
Scott and Jeff each shot a turkey on Saturday morning – Jeff a tom, Scott a jake. We raced home Saturday afternoon to beat the blizzard that’s preparing to hammer Nebraska. It was a great week of hunting, but more importantly, spending time with family and good friends.
Here are a few photos I snapped – it was a good photography week!
We’re heading to Spencer, NE, this week for our annual turkey hunting trip with my in-laws and three close friends. My five-year-old son will likely join me on a few outings. He’s pumped! He woke up early and put on every little piece of camo clothing he owns.

Friends -
Pick up the latest issue of Deer & Deer Hunting. I’m thankful for Dan Schmidt (editor) for choosing to publish articles on faith and family and values. These issues are obviously a priority for him. (Let him hear your appreciation!)
“Out of the Doghouse” deals with how to keep marriage a priority during hunting season. A subject I still haven’t mastered…

It’s been a LONG winter, but spring is almost here. Turkey season begins in two weeks and I can’t wait. My vitamin D must be low, I’ve got the gray skies blues.
Get those bows out and tuned up, friends. (I saw a man in the truck next to mine pull a diaphragm call out of his mouth this morning on my way to work.)
Last night was my LAST night to sit in a stand this season. I saw several deer and even had three toms walk by me. At about 4:15, a decent buck came walking down the slough toward my stand. He was limping, so I assumed he’d been wounded during rifle season. He angled off and presented a quartering away shot at about 35 yards. I hit him a little too far back, but the angle helped me.
I pulled off a pretty good blood trail last night and decided to track him in the morning. I found him about a 150 yards from where I shot him. I was so THANKFUL to recover this dear… it wasn’t my best shot. I was also very thankful for the extra meat. What a great last day!!!
